A Great Story

To balance my previous rant I will pass on this story, also from the Province Newspaper yesterday:

WATCHING HOCKEY WORK MAGIC

Autistic girl blossoms

SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The family of an 11-year-old autistic girl have found that taking her to hockey games has given her a better understandingof numbers and brought her out of her shell.

Kathryn Titus is at a kindergarten level but can associate players of the Saint John Sea Dogs with their numbers. She knows who’s played and who’s sat out, something that defeats most adults.

“When she first came she would have her hands over her ears,” says her mom Heather. “She’s definitely not shy with the Sea Dogs. She talks to all of them and anyone she thinks is a Sea Dog.”

Kathryn proudly wears a pink jersey, signed by the team, to every game she attends. – Can West News Service

Having worked with autistic kids in high school (my graduating class invited the four of them who had been with us for the five years grades 8-12 to join us in the ceremony) this is an especially wonderful and touching story.
