Words to live by?

I have added some religious/philosophical study type books to my readings this month, and thought I’d pass on the following sayings I’ve found to you… Warning, they are faith based sayings (but there is a truly enlightening surprise near end):

The world is green and beautiful and God has appointed you His stewards over it.

The whole earth has been created a place of worship, pure and clean.

Whosoever plants a tree and diligently looks after it until it matures and bears fruit is rewarded.

Do you love God? Love your fellow being first.

No man is a true believer until he desires for his brother what he desires for himself.

Be not angry.

The servants of God are those who walk the earth in humility.

Gentleness adorns everything and it’s absence leaves everything tainted.

Have compassion on those who live on earth and He Who is in Heaven will have compassion on you.

He is not one of us who does not show kindness to children and respect to elders.

Do not monopolize.

Little but sufficient is better than abundant and alluring.

Look towards those who are less fortunate than yourself; it is best for you, so that you may not hold God’s benefit in contempt.

Charity is incumbent upon every human limb everyday upon which the sun rises.

God has not created anything better than reason or anything more perfect and beautiful than reason.

Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.

An hour’s contemplation is better than a year’s worship.

He who knows his own self knows God.

Wealth comes not from the abundance of worldly goods but from the contentment of the mind.

Safeguard against miserliness, for it ruined those who were before you.

God does not look upon your bodies and appearances, He looks upon your hearts and deeds.

Kindness is a mark of faith; those without kindness are also without faith.

Feed the hungry and visit the sick, and assist the oppressed.

Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is a great falsehood.

———————————————————————–

The Surprise? These are ALL from the Hadith, or the words/sayings proven attributable to the prophet Muhammad (outside of those in the Qur’an). A few more…

Every religion has a special character; and the characteristic of Islam is modesty.

The ink of the scholar is more holy than the blood of the martyr.

The most excellent jihad is the conquest of one’s own ego.

The following (as well as all the above) is also taken from the book What do Muslims believe? (part of the What do WE believe? series that includes Jews, Pagans, Hindu’s, Catholics, druids etc.).

In their daily lives, Muslims are supposed to follow what the Prophet did… but this is not always the case. The truth is that Muslims have made a fetish of the Prophet’s appearance and forgotten his personality and actions.

So most devout Muslim men have a beard, dress as the Prophet is supposed to have dressed, eat with their hands and clean their teeth with a muswak.

But the Prophet’s generosity and forgiveness, compassion and civility, his strong sense of justice and equality (to women and the People of the Book, which includes Christians and Jews, as well), his passion for thought and learning are often conspicuous by their absence. It is far easier to demonstrate piety by imitating the superficial and ignoring the deep and enduring.

Something to think about, eh?

and from my Beliefs page, something i still strongly believe:

That most of the worlds population wishes to live in peace, with clean water, comfortable shelter, adequate food (and sanitation), and a chance to learn and grow – this is an anathema to the tiny minority of secular and religious authorities who rule the world through violence, oppression and fear (stemming primarily from greed).

So, I guess my way of saying the whole Obama Hope over Fear thing is something i have desired for a very, very long time.

  1. That’s what I like about you my friend, you read, research and think. You don’t get spoon fed by the media. Religions are made up of PEOPLE, and we all basically desire the same thing.
    Nicely done.

  2. Thank-you good Sir. You have a way with words yourself, and you have made my day to know the message i was trying to communicate was received, if by but a single person, thus making it worthwhile. Thank-you my friend.
